SAPPY!

Just got back from a long weekend launching Hermoddities in Sackville, NB and in Halifax. I picked up Temple Bates at the airport on the way to Sackville and Struts Gallery where we launched Hermoddities to an enthusiastic crowd. Temple was an invited guest of the OKQuoi?! Festival which is connected to the increasingly popular Sappyfest. I was sad not to stay with the hostess with the mostest Lesley Johnson, who is in NY, but found sympathetic souls who allowed me to pitch my tent on their lawn. Friday was a down day so I did a walking tour...

Hermoddities is out!

Just got back from a great trip to see old friends in Montreal and launch Hermoddities by Temple Bates at the Drawn and Quarterly bookstore. We screened Peeker, her NFB animation, and she gave her artist talk for the first time and really nailed it. Lederhosen Lucil was awesome warming up the crowd with her freestylin. Temple’s new show of paintings is being launched in Toronto tonight. Everyone (well everyone in Toronto) go to her show at Katharine Mulherin Contemporary Art Projects, 1086 Queen Street West, from July 8 – 31....

Snaps in Halifax tonight

Lots of press today for Rebecca Kraatz’s Halifax launch for her new graphic novel Snaps. The Chronicle Herald posts this lovely picture of Rebecca on the front page of their Arts and Life Section: “Kraatz says she always wanted to be a writer and always liked to draw. She switched between creative writing and art while studying at the University of Victoria. A longtime book lover, Kraatz grew up on Nancy Drew and Judy Blume novels. She had a light bulb moment when a high school teacher introduced her to William Faulkner’s As I...

Lauded!

“I still have chills a day after reading Killing Velazquez. The cover art, innocuous and serene, puts a panic in my chest like drowning. But this graphic novel is as important as it is disturbing. Translated from its original French, Killing Velazquez is Philippe Girard’s shocking confession of his first-hand encounter with a priest sexually abusing teenage boys in the 1980s in Quebec. In sparse, haunting panels of unsettling silence, Girard perfectly imparts the terror he faced as he became familiar with the priest, eventually...
