FBDM is not Science Fiction

Jun 4, 2013 by

I was in Montreal this weekend, in the beautiful Parc Lafontaine, in a big sweaty tent for the Festival BD Montreal. I came for the weekend and doubled up with a launch at Monastiraki for Joe Ollmann’s new Science Fiction and Lorenz Peter came from Toronto to launch The Grey Museum. I was the only English publisher at the festival, although Drawn and Quarterly was represented by their store. Although Montreal is a bilingual city, the park is in a very French neighbourhood, so there was not the usual interest in the Conundrum books. I had one man return a book because he didn’t realize it was in English. But I had another man ask specifically for English work he may not know. I was helped out by my friends and compatriots in the francophone publishing community. Many of them will appear in the photos below. So great to see old friends!

Here I am in the tent with Simon Bossé of Mille Putois displaying his Montreal Silkscreened Atlas, open to the page he printed (my favourite). I love Simon’s work and hopefully there will be a book of his comics ready for TCAF next year. Just sayin’.

The amazing translator Helge Dascher looks over the Atlas.

Real Godbout signs at the Pasteque table.

Guy Delisle signs at the D&Q table. He was the featured guest of the festival. Look at the line!

Philippe Girard!

Julie Delporte signs her children’s book for me.

Joe Ollmann with DUMB creator Georgia Webber. Georgia needs to write down her words since she can’t speak (read her mini comics for more on that).

Jimmy Beaulieu.

Saturday night was the gin and tonic party at Monastiraki. Joe gave a passionate but short talk about alien abductees named Barney and Betty (like the Flintstones!). Lorenz showed pages from The Grey Museum. Mostly is was about FUN, oh and a lot of fantastic cartoonists were in the house.

Our co-host Billy with Sarah Truman who came from Hamilton to convince everyone to move there. Notice the size of the screen.

Here is Lorenz and Joe and Lorenz’s partner (sorry, I didn’t catch her name, I’m a terrible host).

Doug Wright jury member, keyboardist in The Dears, and full time mom, Natalia Yanchak with baby Apollo.

Writer and educator Dana Bath, musician Scott Gray, artist Todd Stewart, and cartoonist Pat McEown.

Master cartoonists in the house! Pascal Girard, Ethan Rilly, Philippe Girard, Joe Ollmann, and Howard Chackowicz.

Thanks Montreal. See you next time….
