Just got back from two weeks in sunny and busy Montreal. Ah, I miss Montreal in the summer. Lots of picnics in the spray parks with friends, saw Shary Boyle’s new work at the MAC, attended a Distroboto launch of a new Pascal Girard silkscreened mini at Cheval Blanc. But especially fun was hosting an event at our friend’s Drawn and Quarterly bookstore for Claire Seringhaus and Michel Rabagliati. Claire did a great presentation and warmed up the crowd for Michel who was there signing his latest in English The Song of Roland. It is already getting great reviews, in The Coast and the Montreal Review of Books. Michel’s presentation was very animated. He showed examples of early influences and we got to see the very first sketches of his character Paul.
Especially interesting to note was that his first roughs were not much different (other than detail) from the finished work. The translator, Helge Dascher, and translation editor Rupert Bottenberg were also on hand. Thanks to all for making this book come together. And thanks to all my friends in Montreal. (Cue Bukowski Barfly toast here…)
