The Franco-Belgian comics tradition is long and proud, with an incredible number of masterworks to show for it. But the French language extends far outside of Europe, and cartooning and storytelling traditions are beginning to emerge in French-language regions around the world. In this special French-language presentation for the Toronto Comic Arts Festival, a number of cartoonists from around the world who work primarily in the French language will relay their experiences making comics in their own unique styles. Do their comics pay homage to the Franco/Belgian tradition? Or are they forging their own paths?

Participating in this discussion will be Marguerite Abouet, author of the Aya series of graphic novels and born in the Ivory Coast, Estelle Bachelard (AKA Bach), the author of the Quebecois hit comic series It’s Hard To Be A Girl, Brecht Evens, Flemish/Belgian author of graphic novels including Panther and The Wrong Place, and Quebecois cartooning superstar Michel Rabagliati, creator of the Paul series of graphic novels. The event will be moderated by Thierry Lasserre, Director of the Alliance Française de Toronto.

This event will be conducted primarily in French.
