Paul Up North

The ink is literally drying on the contract for the English language rights of Michel Rabagliati’s next graphic novel in his semi-autobiographical Paul series. The book will debut in French from Montreal publisher La Pasteque in the Fall of this year and Conundrum hopes to debut at TCAF 2016.

The French title is Paul dans le nord which would literally translate to Paul up North. Translation will be by Helge Dascher, who has worked on all of Rabagliati’s English editions, including the Doug Wright Award winning Paul Joins the Scouts (2014) and The Song of Roland (2013). It will be part of Conundrum’s growing BDANG Imprint for Quebec artists in translation.

The action takes place just before and during the 1976 Olympics in Montréal (remember gymnast Nadia Comaneci and high jumper Greg Joy?). Paul is 16 and enters an age of discovery. He changes schools, falls deeply in love and gets dumped, smokes pot and drinks beer. All this with a Peter Frampton soundtrack.

An excerpt was recently featured in Toronto’s Taddle Creek magazine in the original French. Consider it a teaser…
